ONE NIGHT ONLY IN MYKONOS

Twenty photos from our twenty hours in Mykonos

Mykonos Happiness 2.jpg

When planning our recent getaway to Syros (Greece), I was given two options to get to the island;

Option 1: A long ferry ride from Athens or, Option 2: Stopping over on another island for a night before a shorter commute the next morning.

As someone whose stomach doesn't see eye-to-eye with boats, I was already hesitant to go with option one. But when I found out that Mykonos was the easiest island to stop at, I was there in a heartbeat.

From what I had seen and heard about Mykonos, it sounded like an island that would fulfil all my Greek fantasies - the picture-perfect white houses, a skyline of blue roofs and balconies, stunning stone-paved streets that sit in the shadows of pink bougainvillea and that lead to touch the edge of the Mediterranean. And Mykonos fulfilled my expectations in every way.

The only disappointment - that was totally self-inflicted!! - was that we only had a mere twenty hours to take in the magic of this island. So our visit to Mykonos was a highlights tour; a one night only performance where we covered off all of the greatest hits - the spots that everyone knows, loves and over-shares on Instagram (guilty!).

But no matter how overdone and over-photographed these places are in Mykonos, nothing beats basking in their beauty for the first time. And hopefully the second, third and forth, because don't worry Mykonos, you'll certainly be seeing us again soon.

- WHEN IN MYKONOs -

STAY

If you want to truly indulge while you're there, spoil yourself with a stay at Cavo Tagoo. Just wait for my next post; you'll see why.

TRAVEL

To Mykonos

While ferries do sail regularly from Athens to Mykonos, Athens airport offers connecting flights straight out to the island that are only 45 minutes. The easiest and quickest option, especially if you have just flown into the Greek capital from elsewhere.

While in Mykonos

Hire yourself a scooter or a quad bike. The easiest way to get around, to park, and the best way to see the island at your own pace. (A scooter should cost you £12 - £15 a day and  £7 to fill up).

EAT

LITTLE VENICE

Head to Little Venice for an evening meal and make sure to get there for sunset and get a table at the water's edge. While all of the restaurants along that strip will offer a magical view, we had a great meal at Sunset Taverna. However, prepare yourself to pay tourist prices in Little Venice - with a vista like that and it's consequent popularity, the restaurants can get away with charging top dollar.

Familia

The closest we got to dining at Familia was unfortunately walking past it when it caught my eye. A beautifully-rustic yet sophisticated taverna that has you dining under a pink bougainvillea sky. Definitely worth a drink or a taste of their rich Mediterranean menu; it's on our list for next time.

DO

Like in any popular European town, the best advice is to explore Mykonos early before the crowds are up. That way you get to soak in all the town's beauty and sights rather than dodging camera-wielding tourists and seeing more of the crowds than you do of the town itself.

The boutique-lined streets offer amazing shopping if fancy your quality and designer goods. Despite falling in love with every single window display, I purposely didn't go into a single shop (slash also wasn't allowed) otherwise I would have sent myself broke.

BEST PHOTO SPOT

You can't go to Mykonos and not have a shot at the famous windmills but, again, go early to beat all the others with the same idea.

Almost all of the streets in the Town Centre are also picture perfect but, again, get there when everyone else is still sleeping or having breakfast so you've got them all to yourself.

highlight

An obvious one if you've ever been to Greece - the sunsets. I've never seen a sunset that has lit the sky on fire quite like I did in Mykonos.

Wish I'd Done

Had we had more time, I would have loved to explore more of the island. In particular I have heard rave reviews about Kalua and Scorpios beach clubs. (Check out my girl Jessie's Mykonos blog post that shows you why these two spots should be on your intinerary).

TIP

Mykonos is a small island that attracts a lot of wealth and a lot of tourists so prepare yourself for it to be a pricey holiday.
